The Second Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment were in Salonika as part of the British Salonika Force. On the 28th November 1915 the battalion, along with one of my great-uncles Frederick Carney, sailed from Alexandria Egypt and then on to Salonika. They embarked on the H S Tunisian at 10:30 a.m. and sailed at 6 pm. They arrived in Salonika on the 2nd December at 9 a.m. They disembarked on the 3rd December and marched 5 miles to Lembet Camp ( Source: War diary 2nd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment)
This is a small tribute page to the men from the 2nd Bn of the East Yorkshire regiment who lost their lives through their time spent in the Macedonian Campaign.

On the reverse of Private Wilson's Medal Index Card was stated 'O1/C Records York requested authority to dispose of his medals 22.3.22'. In his service record, the next of kin, his mother was named as the recipient of the memorial plaque in 1921, but her address by that time was a Union Infirmary workhouse in Chester-Le-Street. She may have died in the interim year - common surname and a few deaths in that area with that name in the death indexes

From the Statement of the services sheet - Buried Kilo 71 Military cemetery (from CWGC information about Struma cemetery 'In the autumn of 1916, the 40th Casualty Clearing Station was established not far from the road near the 71 Kilometre stone and the cemetery made for it was originally called Kilo 71 Military Cemetery') about 12 miles West South West of Seres Greece. Next of kin informed 19.6.19

2nd Bn East Yorkshire Regiment War Diary
6.10.16 Strong patrol of 2 Officers and 50 other ranks of D. Coy under Lieut. R. CHRYSTAL received orders to proceed to occupy ELISAN, believed to have been evacuated by the enemy. Patrol started from left bank of STRUMA at 13.30 - good progress was made. When within 600 yds. of ELISAN, no enemy had been seen. At 15.05 front line of patrol got through barbed wire in front of trenches S.W. of ELISAN. Enemy had by this time opened fire. Patrol pushed on and occupied enemy trenches at 15.20. Enemy trenches were consolidated. Enemy were estimated at 200 rifles. Casualties killed one, wounded five. At dusk patrol was ordered to withdraw to post half way between KOPRIVA BRIDGE and ELISAN. This patrol was reinforced by C Coy under Captain W.T. White.
7.10.16 ELISAN reported unoccupied at dawn. C Coy were sent up to occupy village, withdrawing to post between ELISAN and KOPRIVA (called CHRYSTALS'S POST) At dusk about 16.30 strong patrol of K.O.Y.L.I. attacked CAVDAR MAH but were driven off. Same night A Coy relieved D Coy at CHRYSTAL's POST. Lieut. A. CRICK rejoined Battalion. 50 other ranks joined. Sec. Lieut. J.C BROWN to Hospital

Notified that Captain W.T WHITE had been awarded Military Cross for his Gallantry and devotion to duty on 31st October 1916 19.30 Received orders that Battalion was to move
to ELISAN by 03.00 next day to carry R.E. stores for 1st Suffolks who were to attack village of BARAKLI
16th BARAKLI - ELISAN
Battalion left camp at 23.30 and reached ELISAN about 02.15. Roads very bad. at 0300 Battalion marched about 1 km. to R.E.dump N. of ELISAN. There Battalion loaded up and carried stores right up to village of BARAKLI, following close behind 1st Suffolks who took the village about 07.00
after some opposition. Considerable enemy shell fire all the morning. Battalion got back to billets in ELISAN at 12.00 and remained there over night. Heavy rain all day. Casualties - Other ranks, killed 2.
Wyrall's History of the East Yorkshire Regiment has some detail of the battalion location after the 83rd Brigade's attack at Barakli Juma'a
'On the 3rd November (1916) the 2nd East Yorkshires were relieved and marched back to bivouacs in Gumus Dere*
*The official Despatches in dealing with the general situation, state that : "Under cover of patrol encounters, a defensive line was constructed from Jenimah, via Osman Kamila-Homondos-Jenikoj-Nevoljen-Cuculuk-Elisan-Barakli Juma'a-Haznatar to Alipsa on the Struma, and remained as such during the winter months

'There is little to record for the remainder of November with the exception of a move to the Jahjali area, where the East Yorkshires on the 28th and 29th, relieved Italian troops in the line Staros to Radile...'
